Travellers have left the borough after moving in at the end of May.

Families which moved to Mellows Park, Wallington, were evicted on Wednesday, May 30.

They then went straight to Roundshaw Park where they were visited by Police and Council officers and given a notice to quit.

The travellers were left on Friday, June 1 and the Council said there are no longer any illegally parked travellers in the borough.

Councillor Jill Whitehead, Chair of the Environment and Neighbourhood Committee on Sutton Council, said: "I am pleased that the council's fast, firm action has paid off, and that all of Sutton's parks and open spaces are free for all our residents to enjoy.

"We understand how frustrating these incidents can be for residents, which is why we always make full use of our powers to encourage illegally camped groups to move on.

“The legal process, which every council must use, does take a few days, so we are also looking at ways to discourage groups from setting up camps in parks in the first place."

I think I must be living in a parallel universe as the travellers here are back in Mellows Park!
"Firm, Fast action?! The travellers that are going to blight our Summer are laughing at the council! Mellows Park will again be a "NO GO AREA!!"

Travellers arrived in Mellows Park around 8pm Friday night 15th June, rather cleverly as Council offices closed for weekend. Since then more have arrived - there are now far more vans, trucks and cars than when the previous lot were removed. This morning I took photos of piles of human faeces and toilet paper that travellers had thoughtfully left in the park close to paths where people and children walk on Saturday night. Tweeted it to @lbsuttonnews (Council) who previously said "not enough evidence to indicate travellers were defecating in the park"!! And to take it further as a public order offence, you have to catch people doing it. Will be interesting to see how fast Council acts this time to remove them. Oh, and perhaps Cllr Whitehead & co will get bollards put in around the park as soon as travellers go so they don't come back a third time. It will cost far ess than court costs to remove them and the cleaning up afterwards. Common sense not a strong point at Sutton Council it seems! But the track record re travellers means we shouldn't really be surprised.

It was pointed out to the council that the travellers were using more than one point of entry the last time, why did they not listen, they could have dumped another tractor load of earth along Stafford Road when they evicted them the last time, then at least we wouldn't have the same problem again!! I will not use the park which I think is definitely a NO GO AREA while they are in situ, its way too dangerous the way they drive their vehicles at speed across the grass with no due care or attention to the general pubic and quite frankly I don't want to walk my dogs amongst piles of human excrement! How long will it take the council this time to evict these people, it was nearly two weeks last time, lets hope the Council get theirs fingers out this time and get them moved ASAP!!

Interestingly about 4 or 5 traveller caravans drove across the verges again at 4.20pm yesterday Friday 22 June 2012 into Mellows Park. 3rd time in just over a month. For some reason they left at 5pm, thank goodness. The traffic chaos on Stafrd Road was terrible yet the Police do nothing. I am putting constant pressure on Council to act (I speak on behalf of many local residents) so one day I am optimistic something will get done. I'm not going to give up so polite pester power may work - eventually!!

I will also inform the council of this, hopefully the more locals that keep complaining the more the council will be pressured to do something about it!
