The boundaries of Leatherhead’s conservation area are being extended to protect the historical and unique characteristics of the area.

Mole Valley has 28 conservation areas, which are reviewed regularly, and Leatherhead's is one of the largest.

It includes the town’s historic, architecturally-varied centre, its Victorian and Edwardian suburbs, the tree-lined banks of the River Mole and a variety of other special areas.

The conservation area is being extended to include Mansion Gardens, which provides a setting for The Mansion in Church Street; the Epsom Road junction, which allows two parts of the conservation area to be linked; a number of early 20th century properties in Highlands Road; and an area of The Crescent and Russell Court.

Including them in the conservation area will ensure they are preserved and enhanced.

Councillor John Northcott, portfolio holder for planning on Mole Valley Council, said: "Extending a conservation area requires careful consideration, and it has been essential that we consult with residents and businesses in the area.

"If we are careful to protect special areas, this will also encourage inward investment and new business. The environment and economy are closely linked."
