Sutton teenage carer in Olympic Torch Relay
5:00pm Friday 20th July 2012 in News By Matt Watts
Emily Baxter-Derrington
A teenage carer from Sutton carried the Olympic flame this afternoon as part of the London 2012 torch relay.
Emily Baxter-Derrington, who has been registered with the Young Carers Service at Sutton Carers Centre since April 2011, carried the Olympic Torch on part of its journey through Redhill, Surrey.
The 14-year-old was chosen as an official London 2012 Olympic Torchbearer via Coca-Cola’s Future Flames campaign, which recognises and rewards the positive contributions young people make in their communities.
Emily is a carer for her brother who has been diagnosed with depression and suffers from alcohol abuse.
She provides support, both emotional and physical, and carries out an increased amount of household duties to support both of her parents. Emily was cheered on by huge crowds who lined the streets.
The Olympic Torch will pass through Sutton on Monday.
