Green flags for Sutton parks

Sutton’s parks have been recognised as some of the best in the country.

Five parks have achieved the green flag award which recognises their facilities and maintenance.

Oaks Park, The Grove, Cheam Park and Cheam Recreation Ground have all retained their honour.

New green flags have been awarded to Beddington Park, The Grange and Nonsuch Park, which is jointly managed with Epsom & Ewell Borough Council.

Councillor Jill Whitehead, chair of Sutton’s environment and neighbourhoods committee, said: “Achieving five green flags highlights Sutton’s status as one of London’s greenest boroughs.

"I’d like to thank the park staff, volunteers and friends groups for all their hard work making the borough’s parks some of the best in the country.

“Our green spaces are something that residents really value, so it’s great news that they are continuing to go from strength to strength.”

would be nice if the water features of the Grange and Beddington parks were restored to their former beauty in the 70s they were a beautiful place to sit by, now they are choked with weed and algae and littered with old tree branches and litter

Beddington Park and the adjacent Landfill Nature Walk permissive footpath are wonderful areas for relaxation and exercise. Network Rail and LBS cease your hard nosed, testosterone driven brinkmanship and instead pool your money and human resources to restore the Irrigation and other bridges which provide access to the stunning countryside from Hackbridge and Bedzed. The recent expenditure by NR to block access via the well used footpath behind the pretence of legalities is shameful. This link is vital for the future of the grand vision of the developing Wandle Valley Regional Park project and if public money is wasted demolishing this handsome piece of sturdy heritage brick built Victorian railway engineering the area will be the poorer for it and at some point a new flimsy version will have to be constructed at even further expense. In the meantime I hope some public spirited folk with the necessary skill and equipment will demolish the NR Fort Knox welded metal sheet barriers at each end to restore use of this important link to the local community. This would be morally justified as NR are the vandals not the people who live in this area and appreciate, respect and nurture the wonderful local environment. Commuters should support the protest because it will be you shoved on to a bus replacement service while NR achieve their wanton act of destruction.
