The MP for Sutton and Cheam paid a visit to the Samaritans in aid of National Samaritan Awareness Day.

Care minister, Paul Burstow, praised the work of Samaritans when he visited their branch in Surbiton on Tuesday, July 24.

He said: “I was touched today to see how the hard work of Samaritans volunteers truly helps Sutton residents in desperate need of support.

“It is great to see members of the community coming together to perform this noble task in their spare time, and the visit has given me a genuine insight into the vital service they carry out.

“Charities like the Samaritans are fantastic and we must continue to support their work so that more and more local people get the emotional support they need in their darkest hour.”

Earlier in the week, Mr Burstow unveiled the Government’s new national framework to improve mental health and wellbeing.

The Samaritans is a nationwide charity that relies on volunteers to talk to distressed callers on the 24 hour helpline.

The volunteers deal with cases that range from those wanting emotional support to callers on the verge of committing suicide.

What this article doesn't tell you is that each branch of Samaritans is individual funded.

Samaritans for this area is covered by Croydon and Sutton (not surbiton) so if you would like to donate to this worthy charity, please follow the link below.

We prefer donations via BT as we get more of your money but also understand if you already have a justgiving account and find that the easier option.

Take care.

How did the Care Minister's visit help apart from providing another photo opportunity?

This really amazes me seen as the council don't count Mental health as a disability at all and when rehoming homeless people in need totally discount any form of diagnosed mental health problems and most other disabilities at that!

Sutton Mental Health? Belmont Neurosis Hospital long gone and demolished, Chiltern Wing Sutton Hospital mini replacement gone, community old Wallington Day Hospital transformed into Wallington Resource Centre gone, new patient designed smart Cheam Resource Centre gone, Sutton Hospital highly regarded Alzheimers unit gone, Oakleigh last council run highly regarded Alzheimers care home gone.
Well done that Care Minister. Samaritans should be worried to have been visited by the Dr, Beeching of mental health services?

Well done to the Sutton Guardian for lazily trotting out a press release from our hopeless and hypocritical LibDem MP.
Why not try some searching questions next time?
