A pair of songwriters have created an Olympic tune – but are banned from using any words associated with the sporting event.

Marcus Bell, 36, from Sutton and Noel Phillips, 42, from Bexley in Kent are The Glory Boys – and created their own alter-egos Mickey and Dave.

They have taken on the might of Locog and the music industry to create a song, This is 2012, which celebrates the London Olympics but because of copyright laws the singers could not mention anything to do with the Olympics of the rings.

Team GB, or rather The Glory Boys have been interviewed on radio stations and a French TV channel, France 2, to talk about their song.

The band is also set to perform on a London bus on August 10 which will be broadcast live in France to an audience of 4 million people.

Mr Bell, who plays Mickey said: "Well, we are both songwriters, and had often talked about writing a song together and when we heard that the Olympics were coming to London we just decided it would be a great idea to write a song for this once in a lifetime event.

"We thought it would be better to have characters than to be ourselves.

"It’s amazing how some people don’t recognise us.

"We wanted to come up with something fun.

"It’s more along the lines of Three Lions – it’s for the people.

"My family are really into it. What I’ve found is that people were quite negative leading up to the Olympics.

"It’s been very much an online phenomenon."

They filmed the video last year on Rosebery School running track in Epsom where Mr Bell works as a sound engineer.

They have also been making a documentary of their story which will be called the Glory Story.

At least 15 schools in and around London have adopted This is 2012 as their official Olympic song and have been teaching it to their choirs.

They have now had over 21,000 views on YouTube and even Dame Kelly Holmes said on Twitter that she "loves this".

The song is available now on all major download stores, including iTunes and Amazon.
