Golden post box in Carshalton and stamp for Olympic champ Joanna Rowsell

The golden post box in Carshalton The golden post box in Carshalton

A post box in Carshalton has been painted gold in honour of Olympic cycling champion Joanna Rowsell.

The box at the junction of Cambridge Road and Carshalton Road was painted gold by the Royal Mail yesterday after the 23-year-old, along with team mates Dani King, Laura Trott won Olympic gold in the women’s team pursuit in the Velodrome on Saturday night.

The Royal Mail have vowed to paint a post box gold in the home town of every British gold medal winner.

Rowsell, who was a 15-year-old pupil at Nonsuch High School for Girls when a team of scouts discovered her, will also feature on a limited edition stamp.

Royal Mail has promised to issue a stamp bearing a Team GB winner's picture within 24 hours of victory being secured.

Rowsell is pictured on her stamp with her gold medal along with team mates King and Trott.

The stamp will be available in a Sutton post office today.

It will be on wider sale within a week.

Rowsell was born in Carshalton, and currently lives in Cheam.

The olympic champion has been talking about the post box on Twitter.

She said: "Thanks for all the tweets about the golden postbox. Sounds like it is in Carshalton which is where I was born. Not too far from Cheam!"

I hope it's had a second coat of paint and looks a bit better than it does in that picture.

Why that one though? I guess it is on one of the main roads through the borough but as we are told that Joanna comes from Cheam, maybe it would have been more appropriate for a Golden Post Box somewhere in the Cheam area.

Earlier article said 'Cheam Cyclist' so assumed that meant she was from Cheam!

Wherever she does come from in the borough though, congratulations and well done to Joanna and the Team.

Everything I've read about her has said she was from Cheam, plus she went to Nonsuch girls (but then hardly a slog from WP), perhaps she was from North Cheam? In which case Carshalton was probably a more sensible place to have the box due to graffiti implications. The box outside Waitrose in Cheam would seem eminently more sensible than anywhere else though.

Just read on BBC website about Laura Trott's Golden Post Box being painted in Harlow and Royal Mail said that it was because she has Harlow as her birthplace on the Team GB website.

Looking at Team GB website.... it says that Joanna was born in Carshalton, so guess that is why they opted for the box they did.

Read the article, it says born in Carshalton, but living in Cheam. No doubt they will paint one in Cheam too - who cares ? It's a great achievement and they can paint them all gold for all I care :-)

Ah, I see, so if the Royal Mail are working on "place of birth" then Bradley Wiggins' will be in Ghent, Belgium, Mo Farah's will be in Mogadishu and various other British team members will have golden post boxes installed outside of the UK then? Sounds like a well thought out plan.

The article says that Royal Mail are going to paint *phone boxes* gold - I'm sure that should be post boxes!

Thanks for your comment 'I hope not' but actually I'm sure that article was changed after us early 'commentators' made reference to it as there was no mention of either Cheam or Carshalton (even though it says it was updated at 8.52)

I don't think 3 of us would have 'not read' the article so thank you Guardian for making us look stupid.

Great observations about Birthplaces though Libby, be interesting to see what they do with them!... on the phone boxes!!

This is such a shame, Joanna is a Cheam girl, she's said it herself, they should definitely paint one in Cheam too!!

Trouble is the Royal Mail obstinately refuses to recognise Cheam as a separate entity from Sutton which it always has been and is crazy as there's a heck of a difference when seeking trades services between Cheam High Street and Sutton High Street.
