Firefighters from Wallington were called to a blaze at a derelict block in Carshalton, in the early hours of this morning.

The crew were called to Durand Close at about 1.40am, and found a fire spreading in the building.

The fire is believed to have been started on the ground floor and had spread up to the first and some of the second floor.

A Fire Rescue Unit from Croydon fire station was called to the scene, because of difficulty accessing parts of the building.

After extinguishing the blaze firefighters used thermal imaging cameras to check the building over, before leaving the scene at about 5am.

The fire investigation unit is looking into the cause of the blaze.

This was not a derelict block, although it would seem that way due to the state of the remaining houses. This block was still occupied by a 58 yr old woman who has been left in shock, feeling unsafe due to the lack of realisation from the council that these blocks are not fit to house people still. The council and Sutton Partnership are rehoming the desperate and needy people who have no choice about being there, in these blocks still for temporary accommodation. It's a total disgrace, and causing many of the families on these blocks sleepless nights, due to the fact that they are under constant attack from teenagers and criminals who think the blocks are empty.

All of the people whom the council have rehomed in these derelict blocks are families with children and are not only having to pay an extotionate amount of rent due to Sutton housing taking advantage of the people whom have no choice about being housed there, but they are having to deal with the threats at night causing many lack of sleep and constant worry but throughout the daytime they are dealing with the constant noise and vibrations from the building site which is developing around them.
And then you get the flytippers who also think the houses are derelict and dump huge amounts of rubbish along the entrance road to the blocks and directly outside the blocks, causing no end of foxes and rats.
So much for helping the vunrable families who in nearly all cases have either had their homes repossessed or homes they have rented sold from beneath them due to the state of the economy.
What ever happened to human
rights? Prisoners live in better conditions!
