Is the secret to this 106 year old's long life never getting married?

Kathleen Bowbrick, who is among the oldest residents Sutton, celebrated her 106th year with a big party surrounded by friends, family and the mayor of Sutton, Sean Brennan.

When asked what the secret to her great great aunt’s long life was, Colleen Taylor, from Whytleaf, said: "No men."

The much loved lady who lives in Eothen Homes in Sutton is known by her family as Aunt Kit and she regularly babysat the youngsters in her family.

The mayor of Sutton, Sean Brennan, presented the former book binder with a bouquet of flowers and her telegram from the queen at her birthday.

Miss Bowbrick is Colleen Taylor’s great aunt and she used to look after her as a youngster.

Miss Taylor, said: "She’s lovely, she’s always happy.

"She never walked anywhere and always ran around. We love her - she’s a nice lady.

"She used to talk to us about the war and the Titanic."

She recalled a funny story when Aunt Kit opened the door to find a carrier bag on the door mat. A ferret jumped out and chased her round her flat until she was rescued by a fireman.

Adored by her family - Aunt Kit was even taken in for show-and-tell by one of her great great nephews.

Catherine Lester, another great-grandniece of Miss Bowbrick said she was so sweet and everyone loved her.

Miss Bowbrick used to help her as a youngster, so much so that before she started school she could read and write.

It was a double celebration as another resident celebrated her 91st birthday and entertainment was provided by a singer.

Coun Brennan complemented Eothen Homes which is known for the longevity of its residents, and said: "It is the marvellous quality of care - it is very much a family."

I was invited there to join in Christmas lunch a few years ago and found it a well kept and homely place with kind staff.
