An unofficial postbox has been painted gold in honour of the Paralympic champion, David Weir.

The gold and red postbox sits outside the Co-op on Mollison Drive, Wallington - close to the Roundshaw Estate where Weir grew up.

The wheelchair athlete has already been recognised for his two gold medals with an official gold postbox in Woodcote Road, Wallington.

Royal Mail spokesman, Nick Martens, said: “Although we understand the sentiment, we would rather the painting of letter boxes gold be left to us.

"We will return boxes painted unofficially to their iconic red in due course”
