Sutton celebrates the start of Black History Month

Black History Month will cover everything from slavery to the election of Barack Obama when a new exhibition opens tomorrow.

An Evening of Reflection featuring a chronological timeline forms the centrepiece of Black History Month’s launch event on Monday 1 October.

The Mayor of Sutton, Councillor Sean Brennan, will officially open the event at the Europa Gallery in Sutton Library and guests will be able to enjoy music from Wallington Girls School choir, performance poetry and a selection of Caribbean food and drink.

William Essel, Chairman of Sutton Black History Group, said: "Black History Month is important because it helps young people identify with their past and provides an opportunity to reflect on where we are coming from, as it's been a long struggle to reach where we are today.

It is also an excellent opportunity to inform and integrate the wider community in Sutton."

The Month is intended to attract people of all ages and key events include Fun With Crafts at Honeywood Museum on 11 October, with children aged two and above welcome to come and join the fun.

On 13 October, the Conversation for Change Concert will take place at Fairfield Halls, Croydon; organised by the Desmond Tutu Foundation and attended by the Archbishop himself.

The Month's finale comes on 27 October when guests will enjoy an evening of Black British poetry, music and drama accompanied by African and Caribbean cuisine from 6-10pm at The Sutton Life Centre.
