Elderly residents have bench stolen from Richard Sharples Court on Cavendish Road

A bench used by elderly residents has been stolen from outside their home.

Residents of Richard Sharples Court on Cavendish Road, Sutton, woke on Sunday morning to find their £350 bench had been taken during the night.

The bench, which had been a gift from relatives of a previous resident, was used daily by residents waiting for the bus.

Claire Grant, the court manager has appealed for its return.

She said: "It's been there nearly two years, but it wasn't fixed down, we never thought anyone would take it. People use it every day and they are very upset it has been taken."

"Some people heard some commotion during the early hours of Sunday, but it was no different to any other Saturday night."

Outraged Sutton South Councillor Tony Shields said: “I plan to secure area committee funds to get these residents a new bench.

"It is a small cost which will bring great benefit to people, after all, what are councils for?  I hope the people who did this are brought to justice.”
