An MP gave a proposed pedestrian crossing outside a school the green light this week.

Carshalton and Wallington MP Tom Brake spoke to parents and pupils at Beddington Infants School about the importance of the new pedestrian refuge that is to be built near the school.

For over seven years, the local community has campaigned for the crossing to help families who have to cross the exceptionally busy Croydon Road.

Mr Brake, said: "The public support for this project has been overwhelming. Croydon Road is a very busy street and crossing it can be a real danger for parents and children.

It is important that we encourage more children to walk to school but equally important that our streets are safe and parents feel comfortable about letting their children walk to school."

Work will begin on October 27 and will take about four weeks.
