A total of 37,075 people failed to turn up to their appointments at St Helier, Epsom and Sutton hospitals.

Dr Ruth Charlton, joint medical director and consultant paediatrician, said: "We understand that people often have genuine reasons for missing an appointment, but it does have a real impact on the work that we do and our other patients.

"Missing an appointment with us can also have a knock-on effect on your own health too - we set our appointments to make sure you are well, and so it’s important that you try to come, even if you feel better.

"I would therefore like to ask that local people take note of their appointment, keep it in your diary and let us know if you can’t make it."

Across the UK 5.5m patients miss their appointments each year costing the NHS £700m.

How do they work out this £4.5 million? Do the staff have a tea break each time a patient doesn't show up for their appointment?

When I worked within the National health system this was why we used to block book patients- booking three or four patients for the same appointment slot because we knew that of three patients maybe one would turn up- otherwise you would have doctors specialists and consultants sitting idle until the patient turned up who was in the next slot, or if you were unlucky, the following one - and they would still be getting paid for sitting idle in their consulting rooms

Nice points made by Martin and Krissi above. If the NHS wants to make an issue of this then let's have the whole story. Many times my appointments are cancelled and postponed by the NHS without explanation. So let's have an analysis of that side and a ventilation of the effects on patients when this happens.

....and an analysis of how long you have to wait over your given appointment time would be interesting. We've had 4 appointments at hospital this year and on each one we've been seen at least an hour late.
