Motorcyclist hospitalised after van smash

A motorcyclist has been hospitalised after colliding with a van this morning.

The incident happened at about 11.40am at Middleton Road near Mitcham.

A 42-year-old man was taken to St George’s Hospital with head and leg injuries.

The A297 St Helier Avenue northbound at the Rose Hill roundabout has been closed while the accident is cleared.

A spokesperson for London Ambulance Service said: "We were called at just before 11:40am to reports of a road traffic collision involving a motorcycle and a van at Middleton Road.

"We sent one ambulance crew, a single responder in a car, an officer, and London's Air Ambulance.

The first of our staff arrived within three minutes.

"Our staff treated one patient, reported to be a 42-year-old man, for a head injury and a leg injury.

"He was then taken to St. George's Hospital by ground ambulance with the doctor from the air ambulance on board."

Before anyone comments that he was taken to St George's rather than St Helier. Be aware that it was serious enough for a Doctor to travel with him, so the Trauma Centre at St George's was the best place.

The St. George's Trauma Centre is there because these mysterious "NHS Bosses" put it there. I bet the patient would rather have gone to a St. Helier Trauma Centre and the helicopter doctor could have been back on board his whirlybird sooner for the next patient.

What a week it's been. I went shopping, had my feet fixed and had a dinner out which made me supermarketized, podiatrized and lunchclubized.

Michael Pantlin - The St Georges Trauma Centre is there, as St G's is a Teaching Hospital and therefore has all the advanced tecnology and more advanced staff there. Its not there because some NHS boss 'put it there' as you say. Having had first hand experience of St G's trauma unit it is the best, and yes you can get there in under 10 minutes in an ambulance! I took 8 infact after my serious accident in sutton and that was in rush hour.Theres a service called HEMS, this is used if the case is very serious and an ambulance will take took long. HEMS attended my accident and instructed the ambulance to take me to St G's as 'St Helier wouldn't of been able to cope' and thats coming from a Dr!. I have family in Australia, they have to travel up to 3 hours to get to hospital, and your moaning as you may have the inconvenience of having to drive somewhere rather than having it on your door step. Ambulances and HEMS are there for serious cases, so as to get you there fast. So before you go accusing bosses of plotting against St Helier do your research. I wonder if you have actually looked at the services that your local doctors surgery provides, they do infact deal with minor treatment, so you dont waste A&E doctors time and allow them to deal with real emergencies, as opposed to your sore toe.
