Hundreds more places are going to be made available in the borough's schools to cope with Sutton's population boom.

More than 200 places have been allocated at four of Sutton's primary schools with Bandon Hill Primary School in Wallington taking more than 100 of those after a plan to renovate buildings at the vacant Stanley Park High School was given the go-ahead.

Sutton's schools will have an extra 210  places in their reception classes from September next year. Amy Johnson Primary School in Wallington's intake will increase from 30 to 60 places, Bandon Hill's will increase from 60 to 180, St Mary's Catholic and Infant School in Carshalton's intake will increase from 60 to 90 and The Avenue Primary School's will go from 90 to 120.

The changes follow a consultation earlier in the year which looked into where the most pressure for school places is and how the borough's population is changing.

Councillor Dave Callaghan, chairman of the council's children, family and education committee, said: "It has been conditionally agreed to expand several of the borough’s primary schools and the implications of an increase in the primary school population are being watched closely.

"In Sutton we are committed to providing school places for local residents. Through continued investment in our borough’s young people we will make sure they have the best possible start in life as they make their first moves to carve out their future prospects."

The council's development control committee gave permission for disused buildings at the former Stanley Park High School site to be converted for the use of Bandon Hill Primary at a meeting on Wednesday, November 21.
The main school buildings will be retained and refurbished while five single-storey buildings on the site will be knocked down to make way for a games area. New canopies will be built on the site to cover other play areas.
