The outgoing head of an academy has been praised for his "immense contribution" in turning it into one of the most improved secondary schools in London.

Chris Mallaband joined St Mark’s Academy in Mitcham three years ago which has since seen a significant improvement in exam results.

Last summer 54 per cent of students achieved five A*-C Grades, an increase of 11 per cent on the previous year, and more than double the percentage when Mr Mallaband first arrived in 2010.

Lisa Peterkin, the school’s current associate head teacher, has been appointed as the academies new head.

Mr Mallaband spoke highly of his successor citing her as the "single biggest reason" for the school’s improving exam results.

He said: "She knows the academy so well, knows what still needs to be done and she has incredibly high aspirations and expectations.

"I am confident that the academy will be recognised as outstanding at its next inspection under her leadership."

In 2012 the school was selected as the venue for the Queen’s visit to Merton during her Jubilee tour.

Councillor Peter Walker, for Figges Marsh, said: "I am delighted to learn that Lisa Peterkin has been appointed the Head of St Marks Academy when the current head Chris Mallaband leaves this summer.

"I am sure that Lisa will continue the excellent work started by Chris when he leaves this summer."
