An award winning former Children’s Laureate enchanted 60 primary school children during a special reading of his award winning book Gorilla.

Anthony Browne wrote and illustrated the picture book in 1983 which follows the story of a young girl and her father who have a magical adventure with a gorilla.

Children from Garfield Primary in Wimbledon listened with rapt attention as Anthony Browne gave a special reading of his book at the Polka Theatre on Monday which is staging a production of the classic tale to celebrate its 30th anniversary.

Mr Browne said: "Gorilla is a heartfelt story that many children and parents can relate to, so today has been a wonderful opportunity to share this with a whole new generation.

"Having the chance to spend some time with director Roman Stefanski and the Polka team in rehearsals has been a real treat.

"Not to mention meeting the Gorilla puppet himself - I have seen my Gorilla’s created in many different ways, but this is definitely the best."

Gorilla will be at the Polka Theatre from October 16 to February 15, 2014.
