Three year 11 pupils at Hinchley Wood School put their heads together to help raise more than £1,000 for their school’s major fundraising campaign.

Katie Hawkins, 15, Meg Stollery, 16 and Rowena Fry, 15, took on a wealth of responsibility and organised a quiz night on Friday, November 15, for the 2Centres Appeal.

The appeal was set up to help pay for a second storey on the current music block to provide accommodation for a new sixth form centre and the relocation of the student support centre.

The project will cost £1.1m, with £750,000 coming from a Department for Education (DfE) funding grant and £150,000 from the school’s development funding, leaving a £200,000 shortfall which must be raised with the school.

The DfE grant requires that the building in completed by March 31, 2014.

The quiz night set up by the GCSE pupils had nearly 100 people in attendance and raised £1,117, bringing the total raised by the school to £18,686.

Katie said: “When we heard about the 2Centres Appeal and how much the school had to raise we decided to help. We know quiz nights are popular and it is something everyone can take part in. It seemed to work as we had teams of parents, students and teachers, 18 in total, it was great that so many people supported us.

“We were hoping to raise a few hundred pounds, so to get over £1,100 is fantastic.”

In a hotly contested battle, a team of teachers were the prize winners but they donated their reward of Charrington Bowl tickets and Dominos Pizza vouchers to the three organisers.

Ben Bartlett, headteacher of Hinchley Wood School, said: “I am very impressed and proud of how well Katie, Meg and Rowena took on this challenge and, of course, with the result.

“Not only did we raise a good sum of money for the appeal but it was also a very enjoyable evening, it is always a pleasure to see members from all parts of our school community coming together.”
