Students’ love of snacks has raised more than £400 for a charity working within a rural community in Africa.

Thames Christian College in Battersea has been raising money for the Go Mad for Tanzania charity which is dedicated to improving health conditions and education in the Diocese of Mara, Tanzania.

The funds raised from the school's tuck shop, which sells cereal bars, juice cartons and mini packets of biscuits, will be used to educate the community on health issues and provide mosquito nets and medical assistance.

Thames Christian College headteacher Stephen Holsgrove presented the cheque to former pupil Matthew McClure, who works for Go Mad in Tanzania, during a school assembly on January 12.

The students were then shown a video to illustrate how the money raised would make a real difference to people's lives in Mara.

Matthew McClure said in the assembly: "Thank you for the donation, it will go a long way to improving and saving lives in Tanzania. Please keep on eating the cereal bars!"

The tuckshop has been open during morning breaktime and lunchtime for the last three years.

Year Eight pupil, Rory Mitchell, 12, said : “It's great to be able to buy snacks at breaktime knowing that every penny goes to directly help the charity.”
