The Sutton-educated president of the National Union of Students had to be rescued from angry protesters chanting anti-semitic abuse and hurling eggs.

Aaron Porter, formerly of Wilson’s School in Wallington, was surrounded by an 150-strong mob who broke away from a student fees protest in Manchester last Saturday.

The 25-year-old was resolute in his criticism of the demonstrations at Millbank Tower in November and the attack on the Prince of Wales’ car the following month.

Fees campaigners, however, claimed the violence was caused by the controversial police tactic of ‘kettling’.

Mr Porter’s critics believe he does not represent students views anymore and are calling for him to step down.

He has also been strongly criticised after calling for the new £9,000 fees to be capped at £6,000 rather than being abolished.

Speaking after Saturday’s rally in Manchester, he said: "The NUS sought to organise a protest with our union partners at which all individuals could take part without being subject to verbal and physical intimidation.

“It's disappointing not to have had the opportunity to talk about the real issue of the Government's cuts to the next generation's future."

As an army of police officers led the former Leicester University student to safety on Saturday, there were chants of “Aaron Porter we know you, you’re a f******* Tory too”.

One photographer claimed he also heard cries of “Tory Jew scum” and saw eggs being pelted at the NUS president.

Mr Porter, a Labour Party member, has indicated he would like to put his name forward to stand as president for a second year.

Elections are due in the next couple of months in the run-up to the NUS annual conference and it is certain he will be opposed following controversy over the way he has lead the union.

The demonstration in Manchester was jointly organised by the NUS, TUC and University and College Union - Police said that 20 people had been arrested
