Serena Schellenberg from Putney was one of many to contact the newspaper over the past week outraged that the council is considering stopping funding the borough's lollipop ladies and men.

She sent in this St George's Day picture of Angela Braybrook, who helps school children cross the junction of Putney Bridge Road and Armoury Way.

She said: "She dances to Heart FM and waves at all the drivers, who hoot back - all who know her love her smiles, which brighten up everyone's day. She has a kind word for all the passing children."

Last week the Wandsworth Guardian revealed last week that Wandsworth Council was consulting primary schools about them taking over costs of the £200,000-a-year school crossing service, with the council proposing that it retains responsibility for training, uniforms and equipment.

Fircroft Primary School, in Tooting, launched a Save Our Lollipop People campaign while parents of youngsters at Honeywell Junior School and Belleville Primary School, both in Battersea, have created an online petition at ipetitions.com/petition/wandsworthlollipops.

According to the office of Sadiq Khan MP, both Honeywell and Belleville have written to the council stating they cannot fund the school crossing patrols but no one at either school has yet been available to confirm this.
