A headmaster has heaped praise on his pupils after nearly all of them secured university places for September.

Louis Desa, headmaster at Bishop Thomas Grant School in Streatham, said his sixth form students had done "extremely well" to get offers from either their first or second choice of university.

He said: "It is the first set of results for the sixth form since it was reinstated in 2010.

"Early indications show the school has done very well."

Deputy headteacher Yvonne Connolly described the results as "wonderful", adding: "We have got a number of students going on to very prestigious universities."

One student, Stefan Worburton, achieved two A grades and a C grade, and has accepted an offer to study English and French at Leicester University.

He said: "I did what I expected. I am quite relieved. But I was quite confident that I would get a place."

His classmate, Taro Isidore, is waiting to hear whether he has won a place to study Sport Science at Exeter University, after he got an A* in Physical Education, an A in Psychology and a C in Biology. He has already secured a place for the same course at Brunel University.

He said: “I am definitely proud of myself getting the grades I did. At the moment I am disappointed that I got the C in Biology. But overall I am happy with the grades I got.”

The school is planning to expand its sixth form in September 2012, offering places to 360 pupils.
