The headteacher of a Tulse Hill primary school has left just two weeks after a parent was stabbed in a classroom in front of horrified pupils.

Sally Hindle left Fenstanton School on Friday, March 2, following a fight between two mothers that left one needing hospital treatment for stab wounds to the head.

Ms Hindle, who is believed to have been in charge of the school for more than 10 years, wrote to parents after the incident, saying she was concerned and anxious about what children may have seen.

In a previous letter to prospective candidates for the deputy head position, Ms Hindle said her time at the school had been “challenging but enjoyable”.

She said: "There is no doubt this is a demanding school to work in.

"Our key stage 2 Sats results in summer 2010 were the best yet for the school, but still put us low in the Lambeth and national league."

A council spokesman said Ms Hindle had left the school voluntarily, saying: “She took the decision to leave.”

He added following Ms Hindle’s departure, the school would be incorporated into the Gipsy Hill Federation, an existing partnership of three schools in Lambeth.

He said it will be managed by a central governing body that will “support and challenge it in a very effective way”.

Developers are due to start work on rebuilding the school as part of the City Heights E-act Academy.

The academy plans to open temporarily in September next year in Somerleyton Road, Brixton, before moving to its new building in 2014.

Councillor Pete Robbins, the cabinet member for children and young people at the time, said the plans marked a “journey of improvement” for the school.

He said: “Fenstanton Primary School is entering an exciting new phase.

“Following the departure of the previous headteacher, it will become part of the Gipsy Hill Federation. The federation will provide added leadership capacity and ensure the transition is well managed and does not affect the education of the pupils.

“The leadership of the Gipsy Hill Federation has a proven track record and we are delighted they have agreed to help Fenstanton school on their journey of improvement.”
