Police have stepped up patrols outside a primary school after two men tried to entice a girl into their van.

The year five pupil at Cheam Fields Primary School was close to a yellow van when a man shouted out to her.

One of the two men in the front of the vehicle shouted to the girl: "Do you want to look in the van".

The girl said "No" and ran off to her mother who reported it to police.

The van was parked near the junction of Stoughton Avenue and Tilehurst Road at around 1530 on Thursday (March 8).

Despite there being a policeman on one of the school entrances, the brazen attempt by the men, whom are both described as black, went unnoticed.

A message was sent out to parents through the School Safe Alert System to warn them about the incident.

Acting Police Sgt Gill De'Voreaux, of Cheam Safer Neighbourhood Teams, described this as an isolated incident as there had been no reports before March 8 and there have been none since.

She said: "We treat all reports seriously and we are carrying out a thorough investigation into this incident."

Police, who regularly patrol the area, are re-appealing for information about a bright yellow van, which has been described to them as a "Tesco delivery" type vehicle.

Police have also released more details of the two men inside the van.

The men are described as black, both with cornrow type plaits - one with neck length hair and the other with shoulder length hair.

Police have added these details to their intelligence database.
