MP Paul Burstow criticises A&E and maternity closure plans MP Paul Burstow criticises A&E and maternity closure plans

Sutton and Cheam MP Paul Burstow has called the review recommending St Helier Hospital's accident and emergency (A&E)and maternity department close "flawed."

He said: "St Helier's future has once again been cast into doubt, thanks to a flawed conclusion from a flawed process."

"We know that all the maternity units across SW London are very busy. So too are the emergency departments - and it makes no sense in terms of quality or safety to close them."

"Indeed, the scoring panel that met last week to give 'credibility' to the Better Services, Better Value review was told that only a meagre 8 per cent of their scoring would account for how easy it would be to make the chosen option actually happen in real life."

"Furthermore, the St Helier option is based on an assumption that more of us will end up being cared for in the community, despite there being little evidence in the plans put forward as to how this would happen."

"The reality is that nobody wants to have to go to hospital at all. In fact, if our health and social care system worked better then people with long-term conditions like diabetes or asthma would receive far more of their care outside of hospital and in their own homes."

"The ideal is that problems are caught early and people have the confidence and the support to manage their condition without the need for an emergency visit to the hospital at all."

"But when we do need help in an emergency, then we want a good local service right on our doorstep."

"What's most important now is to support the staff and patients that use our local hospital. I was born there and so were my three children. Like many people I have been touched by the caring staff that work at St Helier."

"After all, our local hospital has the best patient feedback in South West London - a fact that backs up my belief that this is something worth fighting for."

Back it with actions then, Minister at the Department of Health. It’s not like you’re in a quasi-judicial role or anything...

I recall filling in a survey to choose these criteria so am guessing travel times came in that position, probably because sensible people like me put safety of services first!

It does kind of sound like the minister has been hiding in his office with his fingers in his ears. There has been lots of publicity about this. Slagging off e process is a bit lame as it's been in the paper for yonks.

As Mr Burstow only had a majority of some 1,600 at the last General Election I suspect he may have to come out of hiding in the very near future. We may all have some consolation in the very high likelihood of him losing his seat at the next election together with the bonus of never seeing the Liberal Democrats hold office again. Lets hope his Lib Dem Councillors suffer the same fate.

Does Paul Burstow really think we are a complete bunch of idiots?
The review which he says is flawed is one that has been implemented by his very own department...hasnt he ever heard of collective responsibility?
The picture of makes him look concerned...concerne
d about his majority at the next election.
If an independant puts up against him he is toast...bye bye Burstow

Paul Burstow needs to be more pro-active rather than just send out a missive to the media saying that the closure of St. Helier A & E and Maternity was a 'flawed' process. That comment means nothing to the people of Sutton without action and speaking up for us. The comment is not helpful and shows that he is watching his back and his position in Government. With the Lib Dems miserable showing at the polls a few weeks ago, doesn't he think that a proper show of support for his constituents is in order? Not just to garner votes. If he really feels it is wrong decision, show us otherwise he might as well wave goodbye at the next General Election. I am finding a lot of MPs only come on board around election time to make sure people think they are wonderful and get things done, which when it matters just does not happen. I have two lib-dem councilors in my ward whom I have never seen since the last General Election.

Why are you surprised by these news? There have been many hints in the press over the past year. That the review was announced in the press a couple of days after local elections is of no surprise. I truely beleive that St Helier will close down and in its place there will be a local medical centre and this to be announced just after the next general election.
