Grateful mum speaks out about St Helier's maternity unit
7:30am Friday 8th June 2012 in Save St Helier By Sophia Sleigh, Reporter
Dawn Logendra praised St Helier
A mother from Purley has spoken about the importance of St Helier’s maternity department and why she chose to have her baby there.
Dawn Logendra said: “I chose to have my baby at St Helier as opposed to [Croydon University Hospital] where I was originally booked in as that is my local hospital.
“St Helier’s care was brilliant. Every single midwife I encountered during antenatal appointments delivery and post natal care was amazing. I had my baby boy on April 13 2012.
“I ended up having an emergency caesarean section as my body was overstimulated and the quality of care was exceptional. They were so swift yet were able to explain everything I would feel and also what would happen to the baby post section.
“Since leaving hospital I have enjoyed this first month as I feel I left the hospital not feeling traumatised as many family and friends have following child birth and plus I had such good support in the first few days.
“Not only were the clinical staff amazing, but the catering staff were also just so friendly.
"It seems that everyone there works well together as a unit. The hospital was so clean. They came into my cubicle daily to mop the floor. Plus getting to St Helier from Croydon took no time at all.
“St Helier’s maternity unit is fabulous and I am indebted to them because due to their care and support I had an extremely positive child birth experience even though I suffered pregnancy complications since the quality of care was superb.”

One thing no-one's mentioned yet is the fresh air around St. Helier Hospital generated by the wonderful greenery opposite the hospital and behind it in Rose Hill Park. In contrast Mayday is set to receive the full force of the plume of exhaust from the new huge incinerator on the edge of Beddington Park driven by the prevailing SW winds. Of course the private company Viridor have issued assurances that it will be decontaminated and present no health risk to anyone enveloped by it but this will be second-hand air from an industrial 24/7 process mixed in with the existing air quality I suppose in the same way that the River Wandle south of the confluence at Wilderness Island becomes an amalgam of the crystal clear spring water from the joint sources of Waddon and Carshalton Ponds and the outfall flow from the Croydon sewerage treatment works. On a fine day you can see the difference in the colour and smell, or so I could when I went there a few years ago.
