An early Clayton Donaldson goal was enough to give Brentford their first league victory away from home this season as they beat Portsmouth 1-0 at Fratton Park on Tuesday night.

It was a disciplined display from the Bees, especially as they lost both Tom Adeyemi and his replacement Kevin O'Connor to injuries.

But they took their chance and did enough in the second half to hold on for all three points.

Clayton Donaldson gave the Bees the lead with their first real chance, a deft touch steering an Adam Forshaw free kick past Simon Eastwood.

Tom Adeyemi almost extended Brentford's lead when he broke down the right and skipped past the defender, only to see Eastwood block his cross at the near post.

A cross from wide on the right by Jonathan Douglas was hit on the volley by Forshaw, but blocked by the defence.

Pompey's first chance came after half an hour when they broke forward and Jon Harley shot over the bar from 25 yards.

A wonderful mazy run from Harry Forrester carried him past several defenders and into Pompey's box, but his shot couldn't match the run as he fired wide of the left hand post.

Portsmouth's best chance so far came when they broke down the left and Izale McLeod picked out Akos Buzsaky on the edge of the box, who shot wide of the post.

The Bees' defence was almost caught napping just before the break when a ball was played over it and McLeod shot wide from the edge of the box.

Portsmouth had the first chance of the second half when Buzsaky fired a free kick over the wall and into the hands of Richard Lee.

Substitute Scott Barron should have doubled the Bees lead when a cross from the right fell to him a couple of yards out but he couldn't connect properly.

Buzsaky came close again with a snap shot from 20 yards, which flew over the bar. Minutes later Portsmouth broke down the left again and Carl Dickinson fired over.

As the game entered added on time Buzsaky blasted over the bar as the Bees' defence scrambled to keep the home side out.
