Head coach Ollie Smith knows even if his Esher men achieve their target of winning all their remaining National Division One games, a defeat to Richmond before Christmas could still cost them.

The Molesey Road outfit impressed in a 29-14 win over second placed Blaydon to move up to third in the table - only eight points adrift of league leaders Ealing Trailfinders.

Esher, who lost 23-19 at home to mid-table Richmond on December 15, are unbeaten thus far in 2013 and their head coach would like that run to extend until May.

"When we came back after Christmas we said we needed to win every game until the end of the season to stand a chance," he said.

"There is a certain amount of pressure that comes with that goal and the players are responding well to it.

"Even if we do achieve our goals we could come up five or six points short and then the frustration will come back to that game against Richmond that we should have won.

"We have to make these wins count."

Tries from Joe Brown and Charlie Walker in Esher's first two attacks of the second half made the bonus point win safe on Saturday after Patrick O'Grady and Chris Elder had crossed in the first half - much to Smith's delight.

"For 65 minutes of the game we were outstanding," he added.

"We had 15 minutes of madness where we could not pass or catch, but we scored from our first two attacks in the second half and that was enough.

"It was the best performance of the season. We made the second placed team look very average for the majority of the match, which is credit to the way we played."

Esher travel to Sedgley Park on Saturday.
