Kingsmeadow has never seen anything like it.

The home side struck nine goals in just over an hour, an awesome attacking display against Cray Wanderers that set a record for the highest scoring competitive match at the 24-year-old stadium.

Saturday was also Ks’ biggest win since smashing Hitchin Town 10-0 in March 1966 at Richmond Road.

For the last time they hit nine, you have to go back to a Surrey Senior Cup win over Aquarius in January 1932.

It eventually finished 9-3 as an inspired Lewis Taylor completed a hat-trick.

The midfielder's first came after a 40 yard run into the box and a calm finish.

His second after half-time was drilled from distance while his third with 20 minutes left put paid to any hopes of an unlikely Cray comeback, though the away side got the score back to 4-2 through a Danny Phillips header and a Leigh Bremner penalty.

On-loan winger Nathan Koranteng had opened the scoring on the half-hour, cutting in from the right to curl a fine shot beyond the dive of goalkeeper Andy Walker who, remarkably, it must be said, had a decent game.

After Taylor made it two, he turned provider, chipping a perfect cross for Matt Pattison to head in for 3-0.

Andre McCollin got in on the act after half-time, racing round the hapless Walker to stroll with the ball over the line.

Pattison then got his 13th of the season.

Substitute Paul Vines, coming on against his former club, scored a fortuitous seventh, before Chris Saunders got the score back to 7-3.

But there was still time for Pattison to drive in an eighth before Koranteng raced down the left and fired an unstoppable shot into the corner.

It might have been even more, with Wade Small missing three excellent chances while McCollin hit the bar and Aaron Goode went close from distance.

It isn’t the highest scoring game in the club’s history – that remains a 12-3 home defeat to Bishop Auckland in the FA Amateur Cup in 1955.

But perhaps the most surprising number of the day was the attendance of 278, one of the lowest of the season.

With the team challenging at the top and scoring goals freely, it would appear the AFC Wimbledon effect continues to drain away local support.

Ks were due to hos second-placed Concord Rangers tonight, hoever, the game has been postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.
