Despite burying Saturday’s injury-time penalty at Swindon Town in the first leg of the League One play-offs, Kevin O’Connor gave way to Tony Craig for the second leg at Griffin Park.

Craig’s return from suspension meant O’Connor had to watch from the bench as Monday’s Griffin Park drama unfolded.

However, in his 13th season at Brentford, O’Connor is just content to be a step closer to the Championship.

He said: “We’ve still got one game to go to get to our ultimate goal, but it was just an amazing game.

“Everything seems to be revolving around penalties at the minute, it’s crazy. But all credit to the boys there, we hung in and got the win in the end.”

Brentford went into the penalty shoot-out against Swindon without their three most recognisable penalty takers.

O’Connor said: “We commented on that when the final whistle went and myself, Harry [Forrester] and Marcello [Trotta] were all off the pitch.

“But that shows the quality we’ve got in the squad and the confidence of the players who stepped up.

“Once we get back into training we know the ultimate goal is coming up in just under two weeks.”

Brentford are one of the Football League’s most unsuccessful clubs in the play-offs, having failed to win promotion in six attempts, but O’Connor insisted they were confident of winning the one-off tie at Wembley.

“We go into a new era, and we are full of confidence. It’s a great day for the club, the fans and everyone involved – as long as you win, it’s a great day if you win,” he said.

“It’s a one-off game. It’s a massive occasion, massive stadium. “Maybe Yeovil will be confident, but we’ll be confident as well. “They’ve beaten us twice this season so we probably owe them one.”
