Watching Michael Carberry bat is nothing but a privilege for Spencer captain Neil Baker - particularly when he boosts his side's Surrey Championship Premier Division survival chances.

England international Carberry was drafted in for the second time this season on Saturday and hit an unbeaten 117 from 115 balls, and took three wickets, to help Spencer claim rain-hit winning draw against Reigate Priory.

The last time Carberry, good friends with Spencer's other former England international Alex Tudor, played for Spencer he hit 124 and took five wickets in the win over Malden Wanderers and Baker is more than happy to use the Hampshire man's talents when he can.

"It's very nice when he says he can play," he said.

"He has come in and batted brilliantly and it gives everyone a bit of confidence around him - it is a privilege to watch him bat.

"He just really likes playing at the moment so every chance he gets he wants to play."

Spencer might need some more of Carberry's heroics if they are to avoid relegation however.

Saturday's four points kept them in seventh in the table, only six points clear of Malden and heading into a crunch game at Guildford, level on points with them in eighth, this Saturday.

"It looks like being a pretty big game," added Baker.

"The chance to get 13 points against a team around us is always really important and we will have to work out how to play it.

"They will think about not losing, they generally always go for safety first, but I think you have to try and win games of cricket.

"Thirteen points can boost you up the table better than nine or 10 points you get when we enter the limited overs stage, but then at the back of your mind you don't want to gift the opposition 13 points either.

"What's obvious is we need to win some games otherwise we are going to be looking at relegation.

"I do still feel we have enough to pull away from it though."

Having been reduced to 40-3 on Saturday, Christopher Murtagh's 110 helped Reigate post an imposing 294-9 from their 66 overs.

Carberry's unbeaten century and Hugo Darby's 54 had Spencer on 190-2 from 40 overs when the rain came.

Carberry continued his fine form by hitting his best T20 score in seven years for Hampshire Royals on Monday night as his 83 not out from 53 balls helped beat Kent Spitfires by 62 runs.
