Sutton & Epsom coach Jeff Parsons praised the rock-solid nerve of fly-half Frankie Murray after his last-gasp penalty stole the points at Havant.

Despite leading the London Division One South clash 24-13 at half-time, Sutton found themselves 37-36 behind with just two minutes left on the clock.

However, after being awarded a penalty out wide near the 22m mark, Murray sailed the ball through the posts to end a remarkable game and lift Parsons’ men to fifth in the table.

He said: “Frankie is probably our third choice kicker, but he has something about him when it comes to those situations.

“To convert the penalty, at the end of a tiring match, under that kind of pressure and with his little legs was immense.

“I don’t think my heart could take too many games like that, but to win at Havant, especially after the disappointment of the defeat to Wimbledon the weekend before, was a great effort.”

Tries from Shawn Renwick (two), James Bennett, James Caddy, Guy Stuckey-Clarke, Matt Whitaker – plus a Chris Hitchcock conversion and seven points off Murray’s boot saw Sutton over the line.

Parsons said: “It was a terrific game for the neutral. At half-time you thought it was all over, but credit to Havant. They fought back, and with the crowd behind them, they looked like they’d won it.”

Sutton have a break this weekend, but host early leaders Chobham on October 26 at Rugby Lane.
