Marsden is OK with life at Wimbledon Hockey Club
Ben Marsden is a happy player/coach after Wimbledon Hockey Club secured only their second ever win in the sport’s top flight.
Ben Hawes and Phil Roper got the goals at basement side Loughborough Students on Saturday for a 2-1 win, meaning Wimbledon sit seventh in the MHL Premier Division after seven games.
Had you offered that to Marsden at the start of the season, the 34-year-old would have taken it gladly, although he admits the side, promoted last year, still has areas which will be tweaked with time.
Wimbledon have a two-week break now ahead of Hampstead & Westminster’s visit to Kings College School on November 10.
Marsden said: “Loughborough have been beaten heavily by most teams, and we were 2-0 up inside 10 minutes, so we thought we would do the same, but it did not happen.
“We did not perform poorly, but we just did not finish chances and allowed them to get back into the game.
“It was a bittersweet end to the game, but three points is important to us, so in many ways we’re happy.”
The Dons’ other win this season came at Cannock, but they have faced four of the top five teams in the country in a baptism of fire that, for long sections of each game, they have dealt with manfully.
Marsden added: “We have to take a lot of heart out of the fact we have been ahead in every game we have played.
“We have showed that at least in the first half we can compete with the big guys, there was only one game at Reading where we were outplayed.
“We have talked about why we’re not able to hold onto leads. It’s not a fitness thing, I believe we’re just learning about life in the Premier Division, we’re just coming up against teams that have the experience at his level.
“That’s where we will tweak things over time, as we learn more about this league and the opposition.
“On the whole we’re in a strong position, we’re a good group, we enjoy ourselves socially and we’re looking forward to what is coming.”
