Teddington RFC may be languishing at the foot of London Division Two South West, but club captain Fergus Farrell says no one is talking relegation.

Should they lose at second-from-bottom Effingham & Leatherhead this weekend, there will be 13-point gap between them and their nearest rivals.

According to Farrell, the club is a victim of its own success and since a spate of first team departures it has entered a transitional phase.

“We have lost a lot of the older players who were so good for us in the past few years. They’ve had to concentrate on jobs or raising families, and so rugby comes second,” Farrell said.

“But what is exciting is we have six or seven colts now playing regularly in the first team. They are still learning the game and that means they are likely to lose to the more experienced sides.”

He added: “No one has even mentioned relegation – there is a long way to go and the mood in the camp is good, although this weekend’s game at Effingham is massive.”

The fledgling talents of Joe Glover at scrum-half, Aiden Fahey on the wing, prop Sam King and back row Mike Cox have Farrell excited.

“Teddington have enjoyed high times over the past few seasons, and the changing of the guard would cause disruption at any club,” he added.

“But this young group of players have what it takes to succeed, hopefully starting this weekend.”
