Skipper Charlie Clough has warned rivals that Sutton United are still gunning for the Skrill South title.

After Tuesday night’s eye-opening 4-2 win at leaders Bromley, third-placed United are 10 points off the top, and five points behind Eastleigh in second place.

The victory, courtesy of a Dean Sinclair brace, and goals from Jamie Slabber and Craig Dundas, extended United’s unbeaten record to eight games.

Now Clough reckons the remaining 13 games of the season, starting with a trip to Farnborough this weekend, are all winnable.

“We can go unbeaten until the end of the season, I said that about four or five games ago and I still firmly believe it,” he said.

“We have teams from the bottom half of the table to come. They will all be tough opponents, but we can do it.”

He added: “The win over Bromley sent out a big message that we’re still in this fight.

“Bromley were 20 points ahead of us at Christmas, and now it is 10.”

Clough, a September signing from Dorchester Town, has seen central defensive partners come and go, including United stalwart Jamie Stuart, and Alex Wynter – who has returned to Crystal Palace after his loan spell expired.

And while the 23-year-old admitted he was not in his best shape when he first walked through the doors at Gander Green Lane, he believes that has very much changed.

He said: “It took me a while to settle down and I was not as fit as I should have been.

“But since Christmas I have been playing the best football of my career.

“Since this side of Christmas, we have had eight games, six wins and two draws, with five clean sheets.

“We are unbeaten, and you cannot ask for too much more.”
