Fu keeps in touch for a World Championship date with Ronnie O'Sullivan
New Malden-based Marco Fu has the momentum heading into the conclusion of his second round tie with Shaun Murphy at the World Snooker Championship after closing the gap to 9-7 after two sessions.
World number seven Fu was 8-4 down at one point in Sunday's second session of the day but knocked off 136 in the final frame to keep his challenge on course.
The pair will conclude their clash today with Fu needing six more frames to book his place in the quarter-finals against reigning champion Ronnie O’Sullivan.
After splitting the first two frames, Fu needed two snookers to take the third – and remarkably completed a turnaround when Murphy was unfortunate to sink the cue ball following a long pot on the brown.
The pair continued to go tit-for-tat as two sessions were planned on Sunday but Fu caught the eye with impressive breaks of 69 and 109 as the first outing ended all square.
On resumption however Fu could only muster one point in two frames as Murphy established the lead with runs of 67 and 50.
Murphym number five in the world, then nosed a tactical encounter before rattling in the second century of the match – a brilliant 102 – to leave Fu with an uphill task.
However, Fu recomposed himself to clinch three of the last four frames, rounding off the session with the sparkling 136 to give Murphy something to think about overnight.
