Millroy is star in Malaysia
Esher race ace Ollie Millroy got more than he bargained for at the Malaysian Super Series on Sunday.
The 23-year-old AAI Motorsport driver only got the call from team boss and team-mate Jun San Chenin on Thursday for an unscheduled one-off appearance in the series as a test run for the forthcoming Asian Le Mans Series.
And after taking pole position Millroy, who only arrived in the Far East hours before Saturday’s qualifying, took his BMW Z4 GT3 to a dramatic race win by 33 seconds from his nearest rivals – setting the race’s fastest lap in the process.
“The call came completely out of the blue on Thursday night so it was a bit of a rush to get everything sorted in time,” said Millroy.
“We had tested the car at Sepang a couple of weeks beforehand so I knew what to expect, which was just as well considering I only arrived before qualifying.
“We saw the weekend as another opportunity to develop the car ahead of the Asian Le Mans Series’ opening round, so to come away with a dominant victory is just the icing on the cake.
“The car felt great and we’ve made a lot of progress since the first test. Having a chance to race with Jun San was also useful preparation before the real thing.”
The opening round of this season’s Asian Le Mans Series is in South Korea on July 20.
