Spencer CC skipper Neil Baker hailed his side’s never say die attitude after a 93-run win at reigning Premier Division champions Wimbledon.

Spencer, having been put into bat, were struggling on 42-6 before a seventh wicket stand of 79 between Adam Rouse (49) and George Edwards (67) guided the visitors to 191-9 off their 50 overs.

Spencer then replied in devastating form with Steven Lewis getting a hat-trick (5-16) and Edwards (4-20) blowing the Wimbledon batting attack away for 98 inside 26 overs.

Baker said: “To beat Wimbledon, who have been the benchmark of cricket in Surrey for some five years, is fantastic, but it is not a case of us sending out a message to the league.

“It’s more about sending a message to our own players. Not for the first time this season we have been struggling in a game only to come back and win, which is a really good sign.

“But we know if we’re to sustain any form, we need to be dominating games from the start, and not having to come from behind.”

He added: “George came out at number eight and batted in the way we know he can, but that he doesn’t often do.

“And then for Steve to get a hat-trick was fantastic, he bowled very well.

“He had a slice of luck with a pull shot going straight to a fielder and a couple of chop-ons, but he deserved his five wickets because he is one of the hardest working people at the club.”

Spencer go to Sunbury this weekend, and faced Chessington last night [Wednesday] in the T20.
