Whyteleafe motorhead Charlie Robertson leapt back to the top of the Michelin Ginetta GT4 SuperCup standings at Croft last weekend.

His runner-up spots in rounds 12 and 13 helped the HHC Motorsport driver open up a significant 29-point advantage.

Taking his tally of podium finishes for the year to eight, more vital points with sixth place in the final outing of the weekend late on Sunday afternoon means the 17-year-old heads into the five week mid-season summer break high in confidence.

“It’s been a good weekend overall, we knew we needed two strong results in races one and two as we were going to struggle with tyres in race three – and that’s what happened”, Robertson said.

“We had the legs on Carl [Breeze] in the second race, I just couldn’t quite get him but two podiums in the first two races was good.

“In race three I tried to do my best with the tyres we had, the car became more of a handful because of the lack of grip but I guided it home in sixth to take some important points.

"We’ve got a long break now before Snetterton, but we won’t rest on our laurels. We need to develop the car more and so we’ll be working hard over the next few weeks.”

Heading into the weekend second in the championship, four points shy of the lead, the teenager produced typically rapid pace in qualifying to secure pole position for round 12 with a fastest lap time of one minute 23.308 seconds (91.82mph) – outpacing former champion Carl Breeze by 0.246 seconds.

Determined to convert his grid-topping slot into a race victory during Saturday’s encounter, Charlie’s hopes were dashed at the start when Breeze managed to edge ahead. Running in second position for the entirety of the 10-lap contest, the Surrey teenager remained close behind Breeze throughout but ultimately settled for the runner-up spot to move back into the championship lead.

Super fast: Charlie Robertson in action

Lining up second on the grid for round 13 on Sunday morning, the Investigo and Blackstar-supported driver held position and following an early safety car period he piled on the pressure to his vastly more experience rival.

Posting the fastest lap on the fourth tour, Robertson tried everything but in the end had to settle for second place just 0.8 seconds shy of the victory.

Beginning the reverse grid third encounter from fourth, the MSA Academy racer had a tough challenge on his hands with Michelin tyres well past their best.

However, he steered his Ginetta G55 to a solid top six finish to cap a successful weekend’s racing at HHC’s home track.

There is now a five-week break in the Michelin Ginetta GT4 SuperCup calendar with Snetterton 300 Circuit, near Thetford in East Anglia, hosting the sixth race meeting of the 2014 campaign at the beginning of August.
