Carshalton Athletic boss Stuart Massey's first full season in charge at Colston Avenue began last week as the Robins' pre-season schedule got underway.

The club has been preparing for life in Ryman Division One South after being relegation last season - a fate Massey could not prevent after taking over the hot seat from Ian Hazel in January.

The former Oxford United man guided Carshalton to five wins and a draw in 22 games - and although his is the best record of the three managers to preside over affairs last season, Massey wants to start this term with a clean slate.

He said: "After coaching two teams [Whyteleafe Youth and Carshalton Athletic] last season I allowed myself a few weeks away from the day-to-day grind of this business, otherwise it has a tendency to consume you.

"We've now held our first training session and everyone enjoyed themselves despite some heavy rain."

When it comes to the squad for next season, Massey is keeping his cards close to his chest, but he did confirm Tony Sinclair, Jason Goodchild and Jason Henry were at the first session.

"I wanted to feel a sense of wanting to be there from those in attendance, of wanting to play for Carshalton," he said.

"That is such a positive foundation we can build upon, and I'm happy to say I came away satisfied with the vibe of the session."

Massey feels most Division One South opposition will view Carshalton as "a big scalp", but he believes the Robins will not be under any delusions of grandeur.

"We'll try to win every game of course, but we'll have a young squad and I'm certainly not going to heap undue pressure on the players' shoulders by making any wild claims," he said.

"The chairman and I want Carshalton on firm, long-term foundations and that shared vision is something I'm passionate about delivering."

Carshalton kick-off their pre-season friendly campaign with a trip to Homesdale on July 22.
