Feysel Nadew clinched gold in the 800m as a clutch of Herne Hill Harriers' teenagers came of age at the South of England track & field championships.

Nadew struck U17 gold with a one minute 56.27 seconds showing in the 800m final at Crystal Palace.

Paul Burgess was another Herne Hill medalist, finishing second in the U17 3,000m in 9:15.61.

Ade Aderinan matched the colour of Burgess' medal as he also finished as runner-up in the 100m hurdles in 11.30secs, while Philip Thomas claimed a bronze medal in the U17M triple jump with a leap of 13.41m.

Harriers' senior athletes were not to be outdone, notably with Penelope Cummings winning the South of England women's 5,000m walk in a new club club record.

There were also impressive performances by Michael Dyer and Mike Cummings at the BMC Grand Prix meeting in Solihull, clocking 3:49.55 and 3:56.42 respectively - both of which were second best lifetime results over 1,500m.

Katie Snowden was below par in a 800m race won by Jenny Meadows, with Snowden finishing seventh in 2:06.76.

Lascelles Hussey, meanwhile, was 13th in his 1500m race in 4.03.90.

Herne Hill athletes also clinched the individual women and M50 titles at the Perserverance Wimbledon 5k Dash.

Cathy Ansell's 17:47 was a course record, while Mike Boyle's 17:29 was good enough to see off all those in his age category.

As Harriers continue to mark their 125th anniversary this year, international athletics will be coming to Tooting on Saturday.

A team of 24 Italian male and female athletes, ranging between the ages of 15 to 30 and representing their home town city of Viterbo, are to renew their friendship and rivalry with Herne Hill.

On Saturday, Harriers will host an inter-club team competition within their regular open meeting at the Tooting Bec athletic track.

The clubs will compete in a large range of track and field events to determine who will take home the team competition silverware on this occasion.

Two years ago a victorious Herne Hill squad returned home from the historic and picturesque Italian city of Viterbo after a similar competition.

The Viterbo team will be accompanied by city dignitaries council sports commissioner Sergio Insogna, regional Italian Olympic Committee delegate Alessandro Pica and Viterbo club president Sergio Burratti.
