New Quins recruit Asaeli Tikoirotuma quit New Zealand to get away from the memory of not becoming an All Black – and now they are following him.

The world champions pitch up at Twickenham on Saturday having added yet another rugby Championship title to their collection and are looking to put the skids under England’s dreams of World Cup glory on home soil next year.

Fiji-born Tikoirotuma, who scored his first try for his new club against Exeter Chiefs, helped Waikato Chiefs to two Super Rugby titles – scoring 13 tries in 45 appearances – before making the switch to the northern hemisphere.

The 28-year-old, who moved to New Zealand as an 18-year-old, had dreamed of being an All Black before committing himself to Fiji, who he helped qualify for the World Cup after making his debut in 2013.

He has teamed up with Nick Evans to good effect already this term and is looking forward to making a big impression on the Premiership and Europe once he has used the next fortnight to recover from a few niggles.

And, while he has taken a little while to settle in to his new surroundings, some things have not changed.

“In the Premiership no one really risks any play in the 22 and tends to kick the ball away,” said Tikoirotuma, who has brought his wife and three children with him to west London.

“In Super Rugby, in that situation, we see what the defence gives us and we play it hard.

“Quins tend to play quite a similar way to how I am used to playing back home and it was their style that helped me decide to come here.

He added: “Nothing is better than playing for the All Blacks and when I realised that was not going to happen I decided I wanted to get around the world.

“I’m not getting any younger and I want to play rugby elsewhere while I am still able to.”

Tikoirotuma, who last featured for Quins in the European Rugby Champions Cup triumph at Wasps, reckons the Stoop faithful have not seen the best of him yet and once the Premiership is back on the agenda he says he will be back to his best.

“When I first arrived I picked up a knee injury straight away in training, which was frustrating,” he added.

“I have been feeling my way back. I’m being rested for the LV= Cup so I can shake off a few niggles and then I think my best performances will come.

“We’ve had an up and down start in the Premiership and we need to get back up there in the mix.”
