Striker Jamie White is confident his goals can fire Sutton United up the Conference South table.

White’s prophecy is well timed as United’s only remaining chances of silverware, following Saturday’s FA Trophy 1-0 defeat at Hemel Hempstead Town, relies on climbing the table or winning the Surrey County Cup.

United, reduced to 10 men in the first half following Bedsente Gomis’ red card, held out until the dying moments until Harry Osborne fouled Moussa Diarra in the penalty area, and Jordan Parkes buried the spot-kick.

It means United, who host Whitehawk this weekend, can concentrate on their league form, which is stuttering on two wins in 10 games.

However, White believes the league is so open anyone can make a charge to the summit – and he puts that aim above his own.

He said: “I don’t generally set targets for myself in terms of goals, although if I can be scoring at least one in every two games I’m happy, and that can help fire us.

“But the main aim is to get Sutton United into the play offs. It’s definitely achievable. You can see just by looking at the league table that anyone can beat anyone else, there is no one running away with it.

“No one wants to take the league by the scruff of the neck, so if we can keep this unbeaten record going, get a run together, maybe we can be that team.”

The 25-year-old’s goal-scoring prowess in non-League football is in no doubt, and his record of 87 goals in 101 games with Winchester City and Salisbury Town earned him a move in June to Conference Premier side Bristol Rovers.

However, White could not reproduced the goals and after his contract was cancelled by mutual consent, he joined United.

He said: “I just want to play football and when the Bristol boss told me he could not guarantee me much game time, and that Dos had been asking about me, I knew it was time to go.

“Now I am really enjoying my football again, and that is all I ever wanted.

“It’s very early days for me and Billy [Medlock], but there were signs at Bromley and Basingstoke that we can get a good partnership working.”
