You rarely find Epsom runner Emelia Gorecka racing indoors, but on Sunday she won the British indoor women’s 3,000m title at English Institute of Sport in Sheffield.

The race itself proved to be the best of the two-day championships.

The lively encounter saw the 20-year-old outdoors specialist from Epsom closely beaten to the line by Sara Treacy, who despite claimed victory on the track was not eligible for the British title due to her Irish nationality.

This was Gorecka’s third title this year following her successes last month at British University and Edinburgh IAAF cross-country events.

And Gorecka admitted afterwards that her first experience racing indoors took her by surprise.

“It was nerve-wracking as I was a bit of an unknown quantity,” she said.

“It’s the first time I’ve ever even been in an indoor stadium, let alone raced on an indoor track so it was such a new experience but it was great.

“I tried to get the pace going and it was great to be pushed by Sara – I had a good finish but it was a shame I let her go.

“I’m happy with that considering it’s come off my cross-country work, it’s exciting and I’d like to do more. I’ll either do Birmingham or the national cross country champs.

“But I might not do the World cross-country Champs (in China next month) as I’m in my third year of university so I’m very busy.

"I’ll probably just get myself geared up for the outdoor track season.”
