Having conquered the county indoor scene, Hercules Wimbledon AC’s young sprint sensation Jaleel Roper is now aiming for a national crown.

The 12-year-old won 60m gold at the Surrey County Championships over the weekend, winning the final at the David Weir Leisure Centre in 7.53 seconds.

Roper had gone faster in winning his semi-final, clocking 7.52secs to beat the UK age record (7.54secs) he set last month.

Coach Paul Miller said: “It was a really impressive series of runs.

“Our next target is the England indoor championships in Sheffield at the end of the month.

“He will be competing in the U15 age group against much older runners, so it will be a good experience for him.”

Meanwhile, clubmate Miles Ayoola, won 60m bronze in 8.39secs.

There was a second gold for the club from Emily Martin who leapt 5.56m to win the long jump, while David Harris won bronze in the men’s pole vault, clearing 2.7m.

Elsewhere, Hercules’ Surrey 400m representative Dwayne Cowan showed his best indoor form at the Sainsbury's Indoor British Championships in Sheffield over the weekend.

He finished runner-up in his heat in 47.67secs, and was then second in his semi-final in 48.10secs, before finishing fifth in the final in 48.26secs.
