Boss John Fowler says Whyteleafe will be in the best possible shape for their Ryman Division One South play-off finale.

A 2-1 win over champions Burgess Hill Town at Church Road on Saturday, thanks to goals from Sam Clayton and Roscoe DSane, sealed Leafe’s place in the top five with two games to spare.

Fowler has presided over a run of eight consecutive wins, but he reckons there is more to the regular season’s end than maintaining that momentum.

“It’s a great run, and of course we want to maintain the momentum,” he said.

“But it was more important to get that play-off place with games to spare so we can rest key players and make sure they are fit and fresh for the play-off games.

“It’s also a chance to give some time to the fringe players so that if they are called upon, they will be ready.”

He added: “There is no pressure on us in the play-offs. Our target at the start of the season was to stay in the league, the teams we could face all started out with promotion as the target.”

Leafe go to Worthing this weekend, before ending the league schedule at home to Herne Bay on April 25.
