Former Surrey coach Keith Medlycott has seen a fair bit of cricket, but even he was left speechless by the exploits of young Daniel Douthwaite.

The Reed’s School upper sixth student was two balls outside equalling the world record for the fastest century in schoolboy cricket after reaching three figures in just 31 balls in a 50/40 League match against Tiffin School last month.

It was a new English schoolboy record with the world record – set by a student in India – standing at 29.

Douthwaite’s unbeaten knock of 125 not out featured 10 fours and 12 sixes – with five of the latter coming in the last over of the match.

The Stoke D’Abernon Cricket Club member was one of three Reed’s century makers in the game, which saw them post 375 for the loss of just one wicket.

Ireland U19 international Sonny Cott helped himself to 139, while 15-year-old Nathan Tilley finished the innings on 100 not out.

It is the first time in history three players have made centuries in the same innings in a 35-over game and Reed’s School cricket professional Medlycott, who oversaw one of the most successful periods in Surrey cricket history, was suitably impressed.

“It was one of the most astonishingly brutal innings I have ever seen in my nine years as coach at Reed’s and ranks as one of the best throughout my coaching career at all levels,” he said.

“It’s fantastic to be involved with such a high calibre of cricket at Reed’s School and this brings to the fore the high sporting achievements across the board.

“With plans to build a new indoor cricket facility at the school in the near future, Reed’s is definitely the cricket school to watch.”
