Quins scrum half Danny Care is not just happy with a place in head coach Stuart Lancaster's World Cup squad - he wants to be the number one number nine.

The 28-year-old played the final 30 minutes of Saturday's 19-14 win over France that featured two tries for former St George's College student Anthony Watson and one for opposite wing Jonny May.

Lancaster had warned prior to the match that many of the matchday squad to face Les Bleus at rugby HQ would only have one chance to prove their worth for his final 31-man squad.

Care, who missed the last World Cup through injury suffered in the warm-up matches,  is up against Richard Wigglesworth and Ben Youngs for the number nine shirt.

He might be expected to make the World Cup squad, but he may have already had his last chance to stake his claim to a starting berth for the tournament's opening game against Fiji on September 18.

"It was a bit scrappy in the second half, but I was glad to get on for 30 minutes," said Care after his cameo was blighted by back row Calum Clark's sin-binning.

"It seems to happen when you come on that someone gets binned straightaway and you are on the back foot.

"We didn't get much ball to attack in their 22, but we got the win and saw it out in the end.

"I'm hoping I get another crack at it. No-one has a clue what team will be put out next week.

"I'm training hard and hope to get a start to show what I can do.

"I'll just trust the coaches with who they are going to pick.  I'll just go with it and when I get the chance I'll try and take it."

He added: "These days it is not just about your starting nine, it is the guy off the bench as well.  A lot of teams change their scrum half at 60 minutes.

“I want to be the player who can start and can come off the bench. I’m happy to be in the squad, but I want to be number one.

"It is me, Richard [Wigglesworth] and Youngsy [Ben Youngs], we're fighting for it. We'll keep pushing each other and see what happens.”
