Sutton Common Rovers boss Darren Salmon wants the community to come out and cheer the side into the next round of the FA Vase.

Rovers face Beckenham Town at Gander Green Lane tomorrow night (Friday) with the carrot of a place in the last 32 up for grabs.

There is also the small matter of swelling the coffers by £1,000, adding it to the £1,700 already won in previous round wins at Cobham and Worthing United.

Rovers returned to the borough of Sutton in the summer after eight years in exile, and after difficult start they are finding their feet.

And they go into tomorrow night’s clash on the back of four league games without either defeat or conceding a goal - including last weekend's 1-0 win over Badshot Lea that lifted Rovers to 17th in the Premier Division of the Combined Counties League.

However, Beckenham Town are also on a good run of form, sitting fourth in the Southern Counties East League on the back of a nine-match unbeaten run.

Salmon said: “I watched them [Beckenham] play Croydon in a replay in the last round - it was a fairly even tie bearing in mind Croydon played but five minutes with 10 men when their keeper was sent.

“There’s a few of our players who know theirs and vice versa, so it should be an entertaining and competitive game.

“But having said that, there is a place in the third round at stake and we’ve already gone further in the Vase than we have previously, and we want to keep that going.

“The boys are well prepared, we had a good session on Tuesday night and we’re looking forward to it.”

He added: “The beauty of the competition is that it is step five down, so whoever we play we’re unlikely to be worlds apart in terms of level.

“It’s a way off, but it would be amazing to go into December and still be in the competition and every step intensifies your focus on how close that is.

“The commercial side of the club is reliant on the successes in the FA competitions.

“The prize money in the Vase is not as big as the FA Cup, however, a few thousand quid from a few games is hugely beneficial. At this level making ends meet is the name of the game.”

Rovers’ fanbase has grown by virtue of their return to the borough, with many Sutton United fans keen to watch a Sutton-based side when their own team is away.

And with the match on Friday night, Salmon is hoping for a good turn-out.

He said: “We have always considered ourselves as a Sutton club, and being able to advertise ourselves as a Sutton club means people know us in the borough.

“We had a tough start to the season, but have started to settle things down, we’ve had clean sheets in the past four league games so we have a bit of belief.

“We’re hopeful, being a Friday night, that we can encourage a good crowd down to the Lane. Everyone is excited about it.”
